The Dr. Webb Summer Mentorship program is a hands-on 2 week summer mentorship program for minority premedical college and medical students who have interests in Orthopedic and/or Spine Surgery. The program was started by Dr. Webb in 2023 to address the lack of representation of African Americans in Orthopedic Surgery.

FAQ's :::

Who can I apply to the Dr. Webb summer mentorship program?

Can students who live outside the US apply to the summer mentorship program?
No, this program is only for US based students.

Is the program restricted to minorities and/or African Americans?

No, but the program is geared towards increasing diversity in medicine, specifically orthopedic and spine surgery so those who are URMs (underrepresented minorities) will be given priority in selection. All students are encouraged to apply.

What makes a competitive applicant?

The program is competitive. In our first year (2022), we had over 75 applications. The students who applied early, submitted all requirements, and answered the prompts in its entirety were favorably reviewed.

How long is the program?

The program is 2 weeks long and typically runs anywhere between June-Aug of each summer.

How many students are selected?

Due to Dr. Webb’s schedule, we can only accompany 2-3 students each summer. Hopefully, we can expand and allow more students in the future.

Are travel/lodging expenses covered?

Yes, due to generous donations we are able to cover the majority of the students expenses. In general, the student will purchase and cover his/her flight however. The lodging (hotel) will be covered on our end, if needed. All food and other expenses will be covered.

Will students be able to participate in surgery?

No, due to insurance reasons students cannot participate in any of Dr. Webb surgeries, but will be in the operating room with Dr. Webb observing the surgery.

Where is the program held?

The program is held in San Antonio, Texas each year. San Antonio is a world-class, major city in South-central Texas within a rich colonial heritage and with some of the nation’s leading healthcare facilities. Additional information on San Antonio https://www.visitsanantonio.com/

Where should students fly into?

San Antonio is served by San Antonio International Airport. www.flysanantonio.com

What is the dress code for the program?

The dress code for the 2 weeks is business casual. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. If you have a white coat, please bring it. Scrubs will be provided to you at the hospitals and cadaver lab.

What is the typical schedule each day during the program?

There will be a tentative schedule provided which may be subject to change depending on Dr. Webb’s schedule

You will spend time with him in the clinic setting seeing and examining patients. Many times, he operates late at night and on the weekend. You will not be required to be with him during these times. This 2 week program is for you to spend time with him during the week (Monday-Friday).

You will have the weekends off to explore San Antonio, however there will be a dinner and/or networking event scheduled on one of the weekends with Dr. Webb. An additional program completion dinner may also be held during the last week. You will also have the opportunity to spend time in a cadaver lab (pending availability), sawbones lab, and a suturing workshop.
